Embracing big data and being brave with innovation were the winning themes at ControlPoint’s Right First Time conference last week.

Over 100 pipeline industry leaders, experts and suppliers met in Chesterfield to discuss the issues surrounding installation quality on pipelines. Presentations from the eight speakers addressed the need for utilities to recognise the long-term consequences of poor pipeline installation and explore approaches being adopted across the industry:

  • Case studies from Richard Hynes-Cooper of NGN, Paul Newman of GTC and Dave Sykes of Radius PLUS illustrated innovations, tools and systems being used on their networks to manage quality.
  • Key research into polyethylene and a more holistic, evidence-based approach to decsion-making were featured in presentations from Peter Henley of WRC, Claudia Toppali of TEPPFA and Chris O’Connor of DNV.GL.
  • The use of data to drive improvements and build a better infrastructure were highlighted by both Prof Neil Lawrence of The University of Sheffield and ControlPoint’s Dave Carey.

Presentations from the Right First Time speakers will be available shortly via Slideshare.

ControlPoint also marked the occasion with the official launch of the BDI, a unique, non-destructive method of testing weld integrity on butt-fusion.  This will soon be available through distribution partners and will be further demonstrated on Stand 05.406 at Aquatech in November.
